PR-G serves the community
of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn,
NY. The neighborhoods 150,000
(est.) residents are primarily of color, and 12,000 residents are teens between
the ages of 15 and 19.
Thirty-five (35%) of
the population lives below the poverty level, nearly one third of the residents
are on public assistance, and educational attainment percentages are far below
those in other Brooklyn neighborhoods. These factors clearly demonstrate the
need for employment, youth support and community development for the area.
Much of the neighborhood is comprised of
brownstones, multi-family homes and storefronts. Building owners are community
stakeholders who care about the cleanliness and safety of their blocks, and the
health and development of their community. PR-G’s services and approach to
learning considers the economic and developmental needs of young people, while
literally “cleaning up Bed-Stuy”.
Since 2003, Bed Stuy’s Project
Re-Generation, Inc. (PR-G) has provided a much needed safe space and second
home to youth in the program. The organization and its Foot Soldiers maintenance services are well known throughout the community, and while NYC Department of
Education reports show a 50% high school dropout rate citywide, PR-G boasts that
95% of the participants who stayed in the Foot Soldier's program throughout their high school tenure graduated.
